Gert is a typical Lancastrian peasant. She lives on a rock in a river so as to keep out of the way of decent folk. She can't remember where she was born and doesn't know her own surname.
She is married to an aging alcoholic called Bob who sits in a chair and sleeps. They have three children which they keep in a box in the woods, out of the way.
